I know you know this, and your caveat is totally valid, but that isn't
really true in a meaningful sense.
Yes, using matrix requires an account at some matrix server. There are
a vast number out there. And, you can host your own - it's not that
hard for nerds, and there are companies that will host your server for
you if you want. You can do this without having to sign a contract with
any entity (self-hosted), and even if you choose to use somebody else's
server, you can do it without having to agree to take-it-or-leave-it
terms with some particular entity.
In this respect it is just like email, XMPP, or web hosting.
It does seem like it would be really good to make OSM matrix rooms
primary and have them bridged to slack also, and if slack corporation
objects or makes that difficult, then I think OSMF/OSMF-US should go on
record publically as opposing the use of slack. (Not picking on slack
particuarly; this should apply to any non-federated system that makes
bridging difficult.)
