On second thought, I probably won't.

I think a lot of the things this attempts to fix are messiness not so much in the data, but in the reality on the ground, and in OSM's use of terms like "suburb" and "town" in a way that is contrary to how they are widely used not just in New York, but in much of the US.[1] I think the proposed changes propagate those problems rather than fix them. But by objecting, nor am I going to fix them here.

What's more, as Kevin Kenny points out, the existing place= values associated with nodes in New York State now are a muddle resulting from previous imperfect attempts to tag things. In that light, what's one more?

I suppose I'll just have to take him at his word that this is all just a start and that, despite the digging in we see here, this isn't being set up as an edit war should the status quo ante continue, with people going in to make changes atop those he plans to put in place.
