Hello US cycling / mapping community:
Several proposed new and realigned United States Bicycle Routes (USBRs) [1] are "on ballot" for AASHTO's Spring, 2023 Round. OSM has permission from AASHTO to use these state DOT route data, links are found in our wiki (for now, at the Proposed table's USBR 37 row, see [1]).
Excluding routes already-entered-in-OSM and Alaska routes — I now call "Dibs" on Alaska routes! — only one USBR remains to be entered into OSM during AASHTO's Spring, 2023 Round:
USBR 37 in Indiana,
though if you are in Minnesota, please take a look at
MRT (USBRs 45 and 45A as Mississippi River Trail) in Minnesota. These are a bit complicated with multiple relations, some of which are approved, some of which are proposed, some of which are or should be faithful duplicates of others. Complicated, but doable.
There are more USBRs (in Alaska, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky and Idaho) this Round omitted here. These are already entered into OSM or are now "under construction in OSM." (I did just call "dibs" up there on Alaska, so please simply leave those routes alone, we've finished entering proposed USBRs this Round in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky and Idaho).
If you want to help with MRT / 45 and 45A, let's talk on the wiki Talk page about those, as there might be delicate issues a person local to Minnesota best sorts out; local help (in Minnesota) is appreciated on these, I can point you to or send you route data.
If you enter USBR 37 this round, please "wiki-communicate," entering your newly seeded / created / being-built route relation while it is under construction (changing its status in the Proposed table from "no" to "partial" changes it from red to yellow). When completed, change its status to "yes" so it goes from yellow to green. OSM pauses there until we hear "Approval" (or not) from AASHTO after the ballot process has completed, for the Spring Round this is usually around late June / early July. Then, we're OK to remove state=proposed tags so bike route renderers display solid colors on USBRs rather than dashed colors while we build them in OSM. And we bump 'em up to the wiki's Approved section.
Thanks for any assistance you might offer by volunteering your (national bicycle) route mapping skills!
Any questions, please see our wiki or if you wish, contact me directly (OSM missive is fine).
