Hi Jasper,

do you mean like a "sounds like" tag for an streetname ? or an name:en tag
with the formal english translation of some street or city (like HCM City
instead of Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh)

OSM allows to tag something with many languages by using different tags:

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:name

even exists old_name tag for the previous names of an street or city.
(Saigon for example)

The fonts rendering shoudn't be a problem cause they are in unicode, as you
can see in the OSM site, all the Vn accents are correctly rendered. Maybe
when exporting to some 3rd party format like SHP format or so it may loose
their uniformity.
