Yeah. With a shock, I realised that other people had been where I had
been...

Still looking forward to an answer for whether there is any way to
access the waypoints / notes in the GPS traces on e.g. iD?

This worked nicely in Potlatch - load my previously-uploaded GPX, and
click waypoints to view the notes etc. I sorely miss this in iD.
