[Openstreetmap] Intro from me/process/feature extraction/standards

Hello list,

I'm Hugh Barnard a map amateur rather than hardcore pro. I'm generally
interested in publically owned maps, so I'm happy to arrive here.

It seems to me that there's a process pipeline:

- GPS trace -> feature extraction/refinement -> (choice of format/pivot
format!) -> Database storage
  -> Possible data exchanges/versions

this is coupled with semi/manual annotation. For the thing to scale up
(citywide, for example), automation, where possible would be good.

I think that the relationship between feature extraction and this problem in
graphics/image recognition etc. is correct. This is a tough area, so
anything that can be borrowed/transferred will be helpful.

Also, perhaps the format choices should be somewhat conditioned by
http://www.opengeospatial.org/ work, though I'm not sure what their deep
reputation is like...
