Oh.  That does not sound future proof to me. :)

Any plans of making it more generic, or perhaps using an(y) UTM zone
instead?

Having the contours on a vector format sound like a good idea to me.
Are there any good vector formats to use for such task?  I guess ESRI
Shape File would work.

A C library would probably be more universally usable. :)

I would expect GRASS to have such tool already.  Anyone know if that
is the case or not?
