Well it's impossible to join segments if you don't have the right zoom
level. In the old applet you had a pretty large "drop zone" where the
line would attach to the node. It's easiest to make the nodes bigger,
of course you could do:
* highlight nearby nodes
* highlight node which we will attach to
* snap to the closest node
* Or perhaps Polygon drawing, click create node, click again to create
line and a node.

I just need a speedy way to join nodes.

That works for me, on x86. Zooming would be rather usefull.
