[Openstreetmap] Performance

Hi!

I am quite new to this project since I discovered it just a few days ago.

What I am wondering about is the performance of the server: It is nearly impossible to get any maps during the afternoon/evening hours and it is not possible to work on the maps. So my question is if there are any mirrors or other means available to get better access to the map data.
