[Openstreetmap] nmea logger/MapGeneration

i'm "playing" a bit with MapGeneration
(http://mapgeneration.berlios.de/tiki/tiki-index.php)

looks nice, it merged some tracks from a test drive last weekend
to a single road.
but it's still a alpha version
(had some problems with bigger data sets from their test data
in the map display, several problems with the input parser and
i didn't find a way to export the data yet)

The program only understands nmea as input
(i tried gpsbabel to convert gpx to nmea, but the parser didn't
handle the format)

Is there any "pure nmea" logger available for linux?
Currently I'm using minicom with logging to file.
