A simple minidisc recorder can give you excellent quality, and good relative 
timestamps.

We've even previously used seperate Right/Left channels with one channel 
providing timing clicks from a source ( a beep generated from a pc in our 
case) and the other the audio.  seperating gave you the syncronisation of 
the event to the commentary.
