Come to think of it, I used to live on a street which had a strange numbering 
system, the first house was 8. I think it was because they intended to build 
nos. 1 to 7 but didn't for some reason. There is a gap along the road where 
there could have been room for houses.

That's also reminded me of another point: a lot of newer  housing estates 
don't use the odd one side, even other rule, particularly if it's a 
cul-de-sac with several branches, typical of 70s/80s housing estates. For 
instance in the above street it started at 8 and went up to about 30, 
sequentially folllowing each arm of the cul-de-sac round.
