It should work now. I tried editing a new point of interest (a pub) while 
downloaded OSM data was present in osm-editor and it worked (it was added to 
OSM without problems).

The main problem was osm-editor was getting confused between data from OSM and 
new data, which was causing some issues. It should be better now. Meanwhile 
I'm going to try and spend some time this week cleaning up the way OSM data 
is displayed in osm-editor. Would like to achieve the slickness of the applet 
but that might take a bit longer.
