With Freemap I have attempted to aim for countryside users. While the level
of detail is not
quite as extensive as an Ordnance Survey map, the maps still show rights of
way, contours, key features
(e.g. summits, pubs, viewpoints), hazards (e.g. bogs, fords) and woods and
heaths.

Many of these I survey by marking their position as a waypoint.
Others such as woods and heaths I use the Landsat data to estimate.

I have imported most of the Freemap data into OSM itself, using tags to
distinguish the
different features. However since OSM cannot do areas yet, the woods and
heaths are not
yet present.

See
www.free-map.org.uk for Freemap
www.free-map.org.uk/osm/ for the version which uses OSM data

I am intending now on focusing my efforts into adapting the OSM map drawing
code itself
so it can display these sorts of features.
