[Openstreetmap] How to be more efficient inserting tracks?

Is dual 2.4GHz opteron with 8Gig of RAM good enough
for java ?
I'm not joking, the applet performance on this machine
in firefox is simply pathetic.
I'll definitely go the osm-editor route
when its track deleting bugs are corrected.
