If you're doing java 1.5 and potentially interested in exploring eclipse, 
you may try to build an OSM client on top of udig - 
http://udig.refractions.net  It already has a lot of gis functionality, 
and will allow you to overlay with lots of other data types.  It could be 
a very good base to start on, which will get you mac, windows and linux 
support.
