So far as I am aware, the applet only fetches the first few thousand 
trackpoints in a bounding box (which these days is whatever size the 
tile happens to be), but JOSM goes and fetches everything, which makes 
Central London look like a blurry mess, and takes forever to download. I 
think the API returns results in reverse chronological order. 
Chronological order isn't as good as in order of estimated positional 
accuracy (since the API doesn't return a proper GPS trace, but just a 
set of points), but at least it means that eventually, if a road gets 
re-aligned, then the old alignment will stop appearing.
