Makes me wonder if a "map library" feature (a fourth tab?) might be a  
viable idea... a thumbnailed library of pre-rendered maps (SVG/PDF)  
which could be browsed and downloaded by the novice user without  
having to trawl through the wiki.

OSM's "greatest hits", such as the IoW and the Weybridge area, could  
be highlighted to showcase what the project is capable of. And there'd  
be links to project pages on the wiki for those who want to get  
involved.

Presumably developing this sort of webapp under Rails is a matter of  
minutes? (no, I'm not volunteering)
