I would definitely vote for this.
What about putting together some static page like the following:
http://www.ostertag.name/osm/maps/Cities/index.html
For a temporary solution to new users to have a look at some rendered maps; I
tried to copy together some of the osm maps i found all over the wiki+web.
This is only a quick try. But if you like it; I can add more images to it.
And If you want the headers/Footers different. This shouldn't be too much of
a problem. Since the script doing all the html stuff arround the images is
selfwritten and easy to change. If you want any other maps to be shown there.
Just drop me a mail with these images.

Another method would be to have a render script (as I already suggested) which
renders multiple images from planet-xx.osm. I can run it every time a new
planet comes out and put the results on this page too. So area script
suggestions are welcome.
