The map features page in my opinion is to UK centric. It so UK centric
that it gives confusion. The description "A no-longer used
classification in the UK.", is not a useful description.
The infrastructure roads should be the same in all countries. But this
is a problem. Even the national mapping authorities in Norway can't
decide what the correct translation into English is. Asking people to do
what the mapping authorities are failing on, is to much.
I believe that we should set up a hiracy definition of the
infrastructure roads. Then each country can find out what local class
fit the definition.
The hiracy
National kept roads (hiracy sorted)
1. Continental infrastructure
2. National infrastructure
3. Regional infrastructure
County and municipality kept infrastructure roads (hiracy sorted)
4. regional infrastructure
5. local infrastructure
6. subdivision &c infrastructure
The hiracy found on Map Features ?
trunk : 1 and 2 : Continental and National infrastructure (National kept)
primary: 3 : Regional infrastructure (National or Federal-state kept)
secondary: 4 : Regional infrastructure - (local kept)
tertiary: 5 : in-town-infrastructure & back roads in the countryside
The list above is much more informative people from other countries,
than what is now.
motorway is not a hiracy, but quality. A one lain continental
infrastructure road is more important than a motorway that do not go
outside the border of the municipality. This is a problem with zooming.
You do not want a local road showing, and not a continental
infrastructure road, just because the local road have 4 time the amount
of lains. The roads in Europe, and the world will be different. There
are approximately 40 times the people per km-squared in Netherlands than
in Norway, and 30 times in England. This will reflect how a national
infrastructure road looks like. *1
My conclusion on the Motorway tag is that a road should only be marked
as motorway, if they are trunk roads (if trunk is the highest level).
This have nothing to do with how it's rendered (color and so on) , but
what is rendered at what zoom level.
I have started a page with the names in Norwegian, with how it's going
to be mapped.
If you look at the Swedish translation of the Map page, you can see that
this is somthing that have to be sorted out. They have not found out how
to tag continental infrastructure roads (E-roads). New Swedes, Daines
and Norwegians do not now how to tag "Europavei" and "Riksvei".
