They don't get put on maps generally, nor on roadsigns. Yes, Cnnn or Unnn is the
ref for the road.

You will sometimes find them in notices from the county council. Suffolk do
publish them in works notices. Leicestershire, from what I have seen, tend not
to.

They are allocated at county level, not by central government.
