my 2 cents..
I use daily the tertiary tag to define main urban roads. (separate
carriageways, more then 1 lane..). I tag all other urban roads as
undefined (but i'm not happy..).
Maybe we could add a dimensional tag to define the width of the road /
carriageway (if oneway).
More about road tagging as italian:
highway=motorways -> Motorways and some free of charge motorways
rounding main cities (Rome, Milano, Turin...) called "Tangenziali"
highway=trunk -> other Tangenziali
Highway=primary -> Strade Statali: Main or historical roads connecting
cities. In italy often are one lane/direction. Are managed by a National
authority (ANAS or ENS).
Highway=secondary -> Strade Provinciali: Local main roads.. connect
cities to towns. Managed by local authorities
Hghway=tertiart-> Urban Main roads: Strade cittadine di scorrimento
preferenziale. Are usualy 2+ lanes/direction.. Full of Traffic Jams
7:00-9:00 and 17:30-19:00
Highway=unclassified -> Urban "standard" roads.
