What about the intermediate SVG file, did this have any data in it or was it 
also blank?

There are some problematic versions of inkscape about which produce black PNGs, 
so if you have data in the SVG and nothing in the PNG, I would look to the 
version of Inkscape you are using.

If the SVG is also blank and the OSM datafile had renderable data in it, then 
the problem lies in Osmarender.
