Have you a small utility (probably needs a command prompt or shell)
called "file" and can you run it on that pdf with and without that
binary chunk, to see if there is a difference?

I'm thinking maybe Safari uses some detection methods (like "file" does)
for finding out about the type of file (so it won't try to render some
binary garbage that has just slapped the extension "pdf" onto it)
