Nothing should stop you from pursuing a carreer in GIS consulting.
You could purchase data from the national Ordnance Survey, improve
it in some way, and then resell it (with a kickback to the O.S.,
and strict copyright and licenses). Everybody who works for it
gets paid, all who use it have to pay, and those who don't pay
don't get any part of it.
But how is this related to OSM? It's the situation we had before
OSM. It's the old Microsoft way, not the new Linux way.

That's what any independent consulting business is about. There is
no need for capital investment in heavy machinery, just bring your
brain, and rent it per the hour. I'm sure that many OSM
contributors make their living this way already.
