I'm not sure if this is pure evil or not: Coders implement an
alternative client atop the OSM REST API. Their client renders in a
different (snazzy or strange) way, and then incrementally stomps the
rendering of whatever parts of the world are viewed via that client.
These different renderings [cw]ould be versioned, the Wiki Way(TM).
This might be a feature.
