[Openstreetmap] speed, at last

 I'm not certain what happened last night, but it sounds like the OnEarth server must have gone down for some time. The satellite imagery is now showing up in the editor. 

Requesting the satellite imagery is one sluggish piece in an overall slow process of tile generation. There are a number of possible steps to take to speed this up, rearchitecting and recoding how tiles are generated. I've been working on some angles, and I think Nick has investigated as well. I am waiting for a couple things to fall into place before really taking this on.

I've been corresponding with the maintainer of the OnEarth WMS. It may soon be possible for OSM to run its own local cache of Landsat. He has produced a tiling system that only takes up 300Gb of space, which is very affordable. This will speed things up considerably, and is generally a very exciting development for any project using satellite imagery. I can say when this will exactly come together, but it's being actively pursued.


Another bit of good news from OnEarth. In a thread last month, I mentioned orthorectification inaccuracies in the OnEarth WMS. That used to be true, but not longer; the rectification has been fixed in recent updates! So that means tracings over the UK Highways, or whatever, are likely quite accurate.

I'm drawing maps, using the applet, and it's slow as usual.  
Suddenly around 18.30 GMT (a few minutes ago) something breaks 
down and the background satellite images disappear.  The 
background tiles are now only white with yellow dots.  And they 
come fast.  Please let it stay this fast.  Don't fix it.
