Hello,

I get from my PDA (palm) a file, which after converted looks like yours, I 
also use the command:

gpsbabel -i nmea -f <nmeafile> -o gpx -F <outputfile>.gpx

only difference from Andy´s being the lack of the -t or -w ...

What I notice is that I have always a pair of GPGGA and GPRMC "messages", 
something like:

$GPGGA,201108.292,5201.7410,N,00419.2799,E,1,08,1.1,42.9,M,47.1,M,0.0,0000*49
$GPRMC,201107.292,A,5201.7342,N,00419.2860,E,27.20,329.97,010106,,*3C

once I tried removing all the GPRMC messages and it didn´t convert properly, 
also didn´t when I removed all the GPGGA and was left only with the GPRMCs.
Maybe you might be missing those...

Check also for spaces in the begining of the lines...there shouldn´t be any, 
and it also doesn´t work if there are.
