No, it's not doublethink. It's all about communication. It's
about *telling* your users that you *plan* to bring things down,
say, 48 hours or a week in advance. What if I had planned an
online demo for today? That would have been completely ruined.
Sure, any online demo could run even better next week if your
upgrade succeeds, but the demo could also have been done with
yesterday's system.
On the afternoon and evening of Sunday July 16, I hope to
demonstrate the full cycle of OSM, from track collection to map
drawing. Could we please try to keep the servers running then?
There's another flaw that effectively stops any online demo, and
that is the random dropout of the tile generator. I don't want to
show users this magic new website and suddenly it spews out white
blank tiles instead of the new free maps. That's a problem I want
to work on, and I sent a bunch of questions to the dev list, that
nobody has answered. As a first step I want to log how often the
tile generator is called and how often it fails. Is that OK?
> My next talk will include a slide about trolls.
Steve, cut that crap now. I'm not trolling. I'm an active
contributor who wants to help this system and project forward.
If you're in the way, I'll find a way to go around you.
