More generally, a way of putting notes on the map so people can find them 
would be useful.

I'd suggest putting solitary nodes close to an item, but separate so that it's 
obviously not part of a track.  That way, if you see solitary nodes near a 
road-end or junction, you can select them and look at the note field.

I've done this in a few places to mark bridges (to say which road goes on top 
and which is underneath), and on places where I turned back but the road 
continued (as you originally suggested) -- I tend to use "note=path continues 
at 034 degrees magnetic" or something if I have a compass handy.

Eventually it would be nice if nodes with "proper" attributes (pubs with 
names, nodes with notes, etc.) were highlighted in the editors, but until 
that time, it might be easier just to create something recognisable (e.g. 
triangle of 3 nodes) with the tools we have.
