Does the SiRFstar III chip indeed receive and analyze GSM signals? 
That's the first time I hear that claim.  Where can I read more? 
It isn't really the common style of GSM operators to let anybody 
have any use of their networks without paying subscription fees.

Or were you talking of some specific products that happen to 
incorporate both the SiRFstar III chip and a (SIM card and 
subscription enabled) GSM receiver?
