Generally I upload my entire GPX track. I either just "know" or mark via 
waypoints which bits are irrelevant (e.g. wander round the garden of a pub). 
One interesting recent example are some GPX tracks of Ben  Nevis and other 
Scottish peaks. I don't intend to construct segments and ways from the whole 
track - as some of the route was cross-country in some cases. However, from 
the SRTM contour data, waypoints and bends I can deduce which parts were 
paths and which parts are cross country. If you think you might forget, mark 
as waypoints. osmeditor2 is reasonably good at dealing with this sort of 
thing :-)
