Sure. VMap0 data is meant to be used when mapping 1:1000000 -- that map
is 1:40000. Mapping at 20 times the resolution of the underlying data is
naturally going to lead to some errors. If you have another attractive
public domain vector basemap that you'd like me to use, I'd gladly use
it ;) Otherwise, the satellite layer is always available.

Yep:
http://labs.metacarta.com/wms/vmap0?request=GetCapabilities&SERVICE=WMS
is used as the free 'baselayer' in OpenLayers, and will be maintained by
MetaCarta into the forseeable future.
