handheld devices should be held steady, otherwise, you get crap if you
tilt them.
I found that, like with receiving faint radio signals, having a good
ground plane on which to attach the antenna (a car top for instance) has
magical values with respect to data quality.
as for those teeny tiny bluetooth receivers, try putting them under your
hat. ;D
