[OSM-talk] How to extend a way?

I was wondering how to extend a way (specifically New North Road, N1,
London) which currently doesn't cover the whole length of the road? Do
I have to make a new way? And what happens to the old one if I make a
new one over the top? (In JOSM preferably)
