In other words, I should have said, Go for it. The worst that can happen
is that someone asks you to leave, in which case do so politely.
Of course, if it's actually private property, there's no point mapping
it in the first place. But as someone else said, the words 'Private
Road' do not mean it's private property, just that the local council
aren't responsible for it. You've probably still got right of access.

What do you guys do with all the roads marked 'PRIVATE ROAD' or 'no
turning' or 'we will shoot you'? I've been going down all of them and
havn't been challenged. Perhaps NickW or someone who knows about rights
of way can comment from that angle too?
If the road is genuinely private property, and there is no public right
of access to it, then you are trespassing. The owner, or a
representative of the owner, can ask you to leave immediately. You are
then obliged to leave, by the shortest obvious route (though not
necessarily by the way you came) If you don't leave, they can launch a
civil action for trespass, if they know your name, ie, sue you for
damages.
This never happens.
