The latest update to the Qt4 version of osmeditor2 has been uploaded to
subversion. In case you're not aware of the status of osmeditor2, the Qt3
version is the most "solid" but is no longer being maintained (save for
bugfixes) while the Qt4 version is the development version to which all new
features will be added to.
The most notable feature is the introduction of a tiled data retrieval mode.
If you are in this mode, OSM data will be automatically downloaded from the
server in tiles, in the same manner as the applet, avoiding the need to
manually download a large amount of data in one go at the start, or manually
download a new batch of data if you move out of the initial area.
Room for improvement still; one or two bugs and quirks at the moment - in
particular it does get slow if a lot of data has been downloaded.
On a slightly different topic... the tiling system is likely to form the basis
of a new OSM app designed for countryside users. On the commercial side of
things there are products such as Anquet Maps which allow you to view digital
OS maps and trace routes on top of them and upload them to your GPS. Would be
cool to have an app like this but Free Software and OSM-based. To avoid
bombarding the server it would probably run off planet.osm.
