[OSM-talk] Garmin StreetPilot i3

Most of the handheld Garmins provide reasonable mapping without being over
the top and can do all the basics for car navigation but obviously not as
sweetly as an in car nav setup would. I use a fairly cheap Acer pda for car
navigation where I need to have a good map display and possibly verbal
instructions. I use this setup for long journeys mainly. But the pda is not
so good for outdoor OSM use as it's not a rugged waterproof device so a
little limited when I am on the bike or walking. It does however store a
much bigger tracklog than that of the Garmin Legend I have but you have to
be careful with battery usage when out away from the car, If I run out of
juice on the Garmin Legend I simply drop in a couple of spare recharged AA
batteries. If I need to nip out in the car and plan to map as I do so then I
often find it simpler just to turn on the Garmin Legend and prop it against
the windscreen than it is to hook the pda up to its mount and power each
time.
If I was starting from scratch I think I would probably opt for a Garmin
60csx. If I just wanted a logging device I would get that separately and go
for a simple unit (ie no mapping at all) with a built in storage card and
longish battery life.
Cheers
Andy
