I'd like to draw attention to a proposed Map Features tag that I have just
put on the wiki.
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php?title=Proposed_features/Source
I think it deserves attention because it touches on a number of areas that
are quite important.
Spam and vandalism. If we find large amounts of mapping that des not have
supporting tracklogs and no other verifiable source then these can be
investigated. The source tag allows users to justify their contributions
where they are not based on tracklogs.
Verifiability. A way with a source tag is potentially verifiable. This
should increase users confidence in the data.
Copyright. Some data, such as street names, may come from sources that we
currently believe are not copyrighted, but may subsequently prove to be
copyrighted. The source tag would enable infringing data from that to be
removed more easily.
Namespaces. Part of the proposal refers to yet another usage for the
namespacing of tags. This might be a bit controversial, but is intended to
address the problem of different sources for different attributes.
Comments, suggestions and alternative ideas are welcome, either here or on
the discussion page.
