Since I'm not really firm with creating ways yet, I currently mostly tag the 
segments with something like: foot=yes,car=no so i later know it's a footpath 
and no street for driving.
I'm also thinking about (later) expanding osm-filter to try to get a 
suggestion for this kind of tags by looking at:
 - min,max,average speed
 - min,max,average angle of turns
 - min,max,average speed increase
 - maybe time of day
Combining these Information would lead in a suggestion for tagging:
  foot=
  bike=
  car=
  highway=
  max_speed= ( max_allowed_speed= max_possible_speed= ;-)

This is on the the things I was thinking of when i was talking of improving 
the tools for OSM. So here is another (probably useless) call for help on 
this part of osm. Patches and suggestions are welcome.
