The text alignment solution *might* work with the current version of
Osmarender since I think it was just a change to the rule file.
The trick is to set the startOffset to 50% and add
text-anchor='middle' like this:
<textPath k="name" text-anchor='middle' startOffset='50%'
class="highway-trunk-name" />
