Short answer: you need to think of some good numbers (latitudes/longitudes and
map sizes) to put into this file:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/PDF_atlas/places.txt
(feel free to update the wiki with your favourite cities, and everyone else is
welcome to extend this list to their own countries too)
To see the results of your changes, you will need to run a perl program. The
program and its associated config and data files are described here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/PDF_atlas
Send an email when/if you get stuck and I'll try to answer questions. When
everything works, it will generate a PDF containing the cities or areas
you've requested. It takes about 15 minutes on my machine (that's for the
10-page norway atlas, with intermediate-resolution coastlines, from the May
2006 OSM data)
If you just want to see results, I've generated a sample output for Norway,
and put that online (~1.6MB):
http://almien.co.uk/OSM/PDF/
That PDF will look distorted and weird-coloured, and the coastlines resolution
is useless, and it doesn't handle the ø in Tromsø, and there's loads of other
problems, but it should give an idea of the sort of thing we're trying to
achieve...

OJW
