That is true, for example if someone added a viewpoint, or, indeed a pub, 
it would benefit OSM as a whole. The only issue there is, the developer of 
the 'mashup' would become responsible for any data contributed to OSM 
through the 'mashup'. Maybe a legal disclaimer would be needed stating 
that features contributed to OSM in this way would be the responsibility 
of the contributor and not the mashup developer?

I was thinking less of trails (paths) since they would need to be derived 
from a GPS trace, and that's very much OSM's job. I wasn't so much 
thinking of replicating GPX-upload functionality from OSM, or track 
editing functionality from the current editors. However as you say there 
are obvious overlaps, pubs being one notable thing: a user of the 'mashup' 
could contribute a pub, the pub location could go in OSM while the 
annotation (a pub review) could be stored on the 'mashup' server.
