How big is the raw DB?

Is it worth copying that directly (bypassing MySQL) mirror it elsewhere 
and generate the planet.osm from there?

As for future expansion, how many (usable) servers are they available 
for OSM now?
What about setting up MySQL replication and the queries running of a 
pool of them?
