Well, this is a part of the definition, I dislike even more. Map Features
suggest using "railway=tram".
Why not just "tram=yes"? Or even simplier, just adding another way for the
tram line with "class=tramway"? This would be much more understandable to
me (hm... maybe not as easy with the online applet..?)
On the other hand... I don't enter much data anyway - I am more a coder
type ("class=coder" ;-). Probably the average map geek are used to
complexe solutions anyway or probably the map features guys envolved past
my simple understanding of how things should be done and found it
unavoidable to have these solutions instead of pragmatic ones. ;-)

Aren't in US the "highways" like the english motorways?
I think that currently the whole OSM project is very england-centric. (Of
course, if this is true, it is not only the fault of the english guys).
