I use Ubuntu 5.10 and tried with ratpoinson/GNOME, they both work.
using java 1.4.2_06, it worked with my Java 1.5 VM as well.

Some times textfields in Java are active but the "blinking cursor"
isn't showing. So just click onit and try to write a little.
