So where are the servers?

I went to Nick's place early yesterday where we loaded a van with the
servers he had built and one of the racks (big heavy boxes of metal in
bits). We then drove to pick up another rack on the other side of london
and then to UCL where they were to be installed.

We got them all moved there and then hit paperwork hell in moving some
machines from one building to another. Once we'd got that done and got
the kit (a lot of machines, metal panels, rails, cables etc) up to the
second floor it was time to close the building. Damn.

Today I met up with Nick (Black) and we went over to mee Nick (Hall) and
we put together the equipment. Nick Black transferred the dev machine to
a rack case, and we put the racks together, put the boxes in, hooked up
cables and configured the machines. We copied the database from the old
to the new box, made a new web server. We installed a KVM and had to buy
a power supply for it and Nick (Hall) soldered some fans together for
the box to house the dev machine. This all took most of the day.

We then hit external problems, we needed to get clearence to use certain
internet ports. So the machines are there and live but we're waiting for
them to be given access to the rest of the internet.

So Nick (Hall) and I have spent two days trying to get things working
and Nick (Black) spent most of today too. Sorry it's not back yet,
hopefully things should move tomorrow with the ports, Nick (Hall) has
done a lot of preperation to make this all work. Pictures:

Nick (Black) has one or two more that he may upload.

I want to say a big thank you to both Nicks for spending all the time on
it and to Stefan and Yusah at UCL for hosting and help.

The past two days cost some measurable things excluding our time like
hiring the van (60 quid), congestion charge (7 quid or whatever), power
supply for the KVM (12 quid) and so on. It adds up... it'd be much
appreciated if you'd consider donating. If the site was up then you'd
see a donate button so please consider a paypal to nick or I.

In any case we all hope we'll be back in business tomorrow.

have fun,
