Are you rendering different colours based on key/value pairs on the 
individual segments, or on the ways that the segments are part of? I'm 
only asking because if you were using the details from the ways, the 
maps should be a lot more colourful than they appear. It's a lot easier 
for people editing to specify something like highway=trunk and ref=A1 on 
a way than on applying it to all the individual segments, not least that 
it saves space only defining such stuff once rather than 150 times.

(And yes, Nick, I know you were having performance issues with your 
renderer using information from the ways, any update on that?)
