I don't think ways had been invented when I last downloaded planet.osm (there 
were a couple starting to appear at the end of the data), but yes, I can 
certainly add that information in the near future.

The TODO list for that renderer is on my wiki user page ("user:Ojw") so feel 
free to add things under a "requests" header. (looks like the wiki is still 
hungover and hasn't woken up yet this morning)

I'm not subscribed to any development mailing lists yet, so I've probably 
missed the start of any discussion on there.
