I guess that there are far more SELECTs than INSERTs, right? Maybe
it's possible to proxy the SELECTs and spread them over a number of
machines, issueing INSERTs on all of them?

I'd like to see some the actual usage pattern (-> several `ps axflwww'
outputs during high load, `vmstat 1' and the query log), filesystems
and mount options, maybe I can come up with a good concept?
>From personal experience, sometimes tile generation as well as
getting the GPX trackpoints as well as the node/segment/street
information takes quite long, which in turn may result in frustration
during the editing session.
